Bored and looking for fun things to do in Richmond Hill?

As someone who grew up here, I was always trying to get out of it.

Now that I’m a bit older, I appreciate the peacefulness of the suburbs, and Adam and I even plan on moving out of the city in the next few years!

Funny thing – Adam and I both grew up here, but we didn’t actually meet until we were in university at Ryerson.

Whether you’re in the mood for scenic views or doing actual activities, you’ll definitely enjoy one of these attractions and things to do in Richmond Hill.

If you’re looking for date ideas instead, check out my post on cute date ideas in Richmond Hill!

Shop local at the Hillcrest Farmer’s Market

The Hillcrest Farmer’s Market happens outside Hillcrest Mall every Sunday from spring through summer.

Shop all kinds of goods, including fresh produce and homemade products!

Afterwards, you can enjoy the AC inside Hillcrest Mall and do a ‘lil shopping.

They did some huge renovations in the last couple of years, and it’s definitely not the Hillcrest Mall I grew up going to.

They even have a beautiful new wing with a bunch of popular stores like Sporting Life and H&M!

LOCATION: 9350 Yonge St, Richmond Hill, ON

Grab bubble tea

Oh, how I love my bubble tea.

Richmond Hill has a large Asian population, so of course you’re bound to find plenty of awesome bubble tea spots.

I grew up visiting Destiny, Ten Ren’s, and Go for Tea a lot, and a lot of popular bubble tea chains from Asia have popped up over the years!

Check out one of these awesome BBT places in Richmond Hill:

  • Chatime (Hillcrest Mall, Commerce Gate, Leslie & Elgin Mills)
  • The Alley (Commerce Gate)
  • CoCo (Yonge & Weldrick)
  • Xing Fu Tang (Times Square)
  • Kung Fu Tea (Commerce Gate, Bayview & Weldrick)
  • Ten Ren’s Tea (Bayview & Major Mackenzie, Highway 7 & Valleymede)

When Chatime first opened up in Richmond Hill, I literally had it every single day for the whole summer lol.

Go thrift shopping

Maybe go pop some tags with the $20 you’ve got in your pocket.

One of the best parts about visiting the suburbs is going to the thrift stores around there, because they’re not as visited as more populated places like downtown!

Hit up Value Village just south of Yonge & Elgin Mills, then head on over to Plato’s Closet by Leslie & Elgin Mills.

I always love checking out thrift and vintage stores in Toronto, but it feels like you find the hidden gems in the suburbs!

Hike at Oak Ridges Trail

Looking to do a little hiking?

The Oak Ridges Trail is a simple hike that loops around Bond Lake, and it offers up gorgeous, scenic views you wouldn’t expect to see in suburbia.

You can access the trail year-round, but I personally think it’s the most beautiful during the fall with all the leaves changing!

There are also some abandoned buildings along the trail, which is pretty cool for photos.

LOCATION: Oak Ridges Trail, Richmond Hill, ON

Golf at the Richmond Hill Golf Club

Golfing is a safe and socially-distant activity you can do with all your friends.

Try your hand at golfing at the Richmond Hill Golf Club, and see who’s the better golfer!

Rates range from $60 to $112 depending on the dates and times you visit, and equipment rentals are extra.

Also, if you visit during in-season weekends, you can get free breakfast before 10:30 AM, which is pretty sweet.

LOCATION: 8755 Bathurst St, Richmond Hill, ON

Stroll through Richmond Green

Richmond Green is definitely the most beautiful park in Richmond Hill, and it’s literally gorgeous all year-round.

There’s even a little waterfall in the park, and plenty of gazebos you can have a picnic lunch in.

Visit during spring to check out the fresh blooms and stop by during the fall to peep out all the autumn foliage!

They host all kinds of events here, from Canada Day to Ribfest, where you can enjoy all of the carnival things like great food and rides.

I used to visit every year in high school with my friends!

If you’re visiting in the wintertime, you can also bring a pair of skates and do some skating here.

LOCATION: 1300 Elgin Mills Rd East, Richmond Hill, ON

Picnic at Wilcox Lake

Fancy a little sunset watching and picnicking?

Pack along a picnic dinner and watch the sunset over Wilcox Lake, or even do some fishing or canoeing.

You can also skate over the frozen lake during the winter, but be super careful!

Gaze at the stars at David Dunlap Observatory

In the mood to go star gazing?

The David Dunlap Observatory is a heritage site in Richmond Hill, and it’s definitely one of the coolest and most unique things to do in town.

The giant telescope here is actually the largest in all of Canada!

The building itself is also pretty Instagram-worthy if you’re looking for that.

LOCATION: 225 East Beaver Creek Road, Richmond Hill, ON

See a performance at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts

The Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts is where you’ll find all the live shows and performances.

I watched shows here back in elementary school, and I even volunteered here for Rogers TV once in high school.

Whether you’re looking for concerts or stage performances, here’s where you’ll find it in Richmond Hill!

It’s located right along Yonge Street, which is sort of the “downtown” of Richmond Hill!

LOCATION: 10268 Yonge St, Richmond Hill, ON

Read at the Richmond Hill Library

The library is just down the street from the performing arts centre, located right at Yonge & Major Mackenzie.

Borrow a book and spend a couple of hours reading, or just get some creative work done in a quiet space!

It’s a great spot to just relax and chill if you’re looking to get outside of the house and do something.

There’s free wi-fi here, so there’s that 😛

If you’re visiting during winter, you can also sled on the hill next to the library!

LOCATION: 1 Atkinson St, Richmond Hill, ON

Watch a movie at SilverCity

Instead of just watching Netflix at home, it’s sometimes just more fun watching movies on the big screen with some overpriced popcorn!

Watching movies at SilverCity used to be the “it” weekend activity when I was growing up, because there really wasn’t much else to do.

I remember coming here as a kid and playing all the arcade games before heading into the theatre!

Aside from Laser Quest and Putting Edge, this is where all the kids had their birthday parties.
