Being the Oldest Driver on the Grid, Martin Truex Jr’s Recurring Decision Is Inconsequential to His Legacy (2024)

It is a tricky proposition to identify a NASCAR driver’s peak years. In recent times where drivers have chosen to call it quits from racing in the Cup Series in their early 40s and even late 30s, there are a few who are holding their own. With the likes of Martin Truex Jr and Kevin Harvick racing going strong in the 2023 season, perhaps there’s more to these veteran drivers than meets the eye. With Harvick calling his time from racing in the Cup series, it is Truex Jr who is now the oldest running driver. And as expected, there’s already a buzz around his retirement plans.

Turning 44 this year in June, Martin Truex Jr is not keen on revealing his plans for the future and that includes his tenure racing in the Cup Series. The 2017 Cup Series champion has aged like a fine wine, especially on the track, and the 2023 season certainly backs this statement. He was the regular season champion last season and finished #11 in the points championship standings. With 34 Cup wins and a championship to his name, Truex Jr wants to enjoy what is left of his limited time at the top level of racing and not to focus on not to dwell on when will he hand his boots from racing.

Lasting legacy for the veteran driver, irrespective of his decision to continue racing in NASCAR

The 2023 NASCAR Cup Series season was a big step up for Martin Truex Jr from his showings in 2022. It was the first time when he failed to make it to the playoffs since his triumph in 2017 under Furniture Row Racing. While his teammates, Denny Hamlin and Christopher Bell did put out a real challenge in pursuit of a championship, it was just not doing for Truex Jr in the playoffs.

From the outside, it looks like Truex Jr could go in strong for some time, but the grueling Cup schedule does take its toll. Going by stats, most of his wins (24) have come between the 2015 and 2019 seasons, with only 8 coming from 2020 through 2023. So there’s a trajectory of limitation to his best performances. The time is ticking for the veteran racer and this is what promoted journalist Bob Pockrass to ask the driver the ever-so-obvious question about his retirement.

The Joe Gibbs Racing No.19 in June 2022 announced he will be back for another year of Cup racing. The next year, he waited till August to announce his plans to run for another year. Going by this pattern, it’s early off in the season for him to provide an update on his plans and his answer summed it up perfectly. Truex Jr said, “I mean come on, it’s January. I expect that question from you a lot this season but it’s going to take even longer this season to figure it out.” Laughing it off he concluded by saying, “I’ll let you know when I know.”

And so it begins … At the FOX Sports production days last week, Martin Truex Jr. had a prediction for what question he expects to hear from reporters like myself for several months (yes, months) in 2024. pic.twitter.com/bnp0GiO2Nj

While his Cup season longevity will be under the watchful eyes, the 43-year-old will have a huge task on hand to defend his Busch Light 2024 title.

Brushing off the disappointments of the 2022 season, Truex Jr roared back in some style with the victory at the Busch Light Clash 2023. This set a tone for his Cup Series season as he went on to bag three wins in the regular season and even clinch the regular season championship. With yet another season in sight, the 43-year-old is looking to defend his Busch Light victory and is all praises for the new format implemented for the Feb 4 event.

“I am looking forward to defending the Clash victory and excited to get out there and see if we can do it again. I like the new format with not having to qualify and going off practice times. because last year we were really fast in practice — I think fastest overall — and then in qualifying, we had to go out after one of those long commercial breaks and the track cooled off and we qualified bad and had to start in a bad spot for our heat race. But, overall, what we learned last year should really be helpful and hopefully we can find a little bit more from there and go back it up,” Truex said.
