LATEST update: June 2024 SASSA Old-age pension grants (2024)

Following the uncertainty of the General Elections, June 2024 SASSA Old-age pension grants are next payable this coming Tuesday 4 June 2024. As the future of Mzansi hangs in the balance after the nation’s closest vote in 30 years, qualifying beneficiaries of June 2024 SASSA Old-age pension grants are encouraged to spend and save their money wisely.

Don’t forget that recent 12.8% electricity tariff hikes from Eskom have far outpaced inflation, and the South African Social Security Agency‘s 4.8% grant increases earlier in the year. While it has dropped from over 6.0% in recent weeks, food inflation data of everyday items has also been particularly volatile this year. Plus, as coalition governments with the ANC will undoubtedly form in the coming weeks, who knows what will happen to SASSA grants in the medium to long term.

Considering all of the above, the outlook for our most vulnerable citizens is not ideal. Beneficiaries effectively have less to spend on groceries and living expenses than they did last month, despite no change to June 2024 SASSA Old-age pension grants.

Currently, old-age pensioners are paid R2 180 (over 60) and R2 200 (over 75). People with disabilities receive R2 180. These will increase again in October 2024 by a nominal R10. However, studies by academics from the University of Cape Town believe this is nowhere near enough to satisfy the number of mouths beneficiaries are feeding.

Academics have found that roughly 4-million old-age pension beneficiaries support households of four or more. And the average income in one of these households is just R6850 (or R1 370 per person). As a result, those actually receiving a June 2024 SASSA Old-age pension often have to sacrifice chronic medication, healthcare, even electricity, just to keep food on the table.

Old-age pensioners who do not receive sufficient financial assistance in their later years are 50% more likely to suffer from illnesses/complications in later life. Specifically, diabetes, hypertension, arthritis, and sight, mobility and cognitive difficulties. That’s why it is so essential that we look after our elderly who have helped build this country.
