NDA Govt Formation Live Updates: Know more about the Leader of Opposition role in 18th Lok Sabha

The LoP is a Member of Parliament who is in charge of the Opposition and the parliamentary chairperson of the largest party, or coalition of parties, with the most seats after the party forming the government. The MP for the post is chosen by the members of that party.

LoP status

The Congress this time got 99 seats and then increased its tally by one – touching the 100 mark – after Independent Lok Sabha member fromMaharashtraVishal Patil extended support to the party. So, there are higher chances of a Congress MP becoming the LoP.

The MP holding the post will also be a member of crucial committees, including Public Accounts, Public Undertakings, Estimates, several Joint Parliamentary Committees, and so on. S/he is also entitled to be a member of various selection committees responsible for appointing heads of statutory bodies like the Central Vigilance Commission, the Central Information Commission, the CBI, the NHRC, and the Lokpal, among others.

At the NDA meeting in the Central Hall on Friday, Modi was elected as the Leader of the Parliamentary Party unanimously. Here's what he said in his speech in which he framed the Lok Sabha poll mandate:

- Avoiding any reference to the 63-seat dip, Modi talked about the “resounding” NDA victory. “Na haare the, na haare hain(We did not lose then, we haven’t lost now)… Everyone knows it is a government of the NDA.To haare kaise bhai(So, how did we lose)?”

- “Even after 10 years, the Congress has not been able to touch 100. Add the seats of the Congress in the past three elections… we got more than that this time.”

- “See the strength of democracy that people have given the NDA a chance to serve them in 22 states. Our alliance mirrors India’s spirit and soul. There are 10 states in India where tribals have a significant presence. Among these, the NDA is serving in seven. We are dedicated to ‘Sarva Panth, Sama Bhava (All Religions, Same Spirit)’.”

- “The country has lived under the NDA for 10 years. People saw what a government is, who it works for, for the first time. In the next 10 years, the NDA government – it will be there for the next 10 years, I say it seriously — will bring good governance, development and minimal dakhal(interference) to the lives of the middle-class and upper middle-class. We will write a new chapter ofvikas, good governance, and fulfill the dreams of developed India.”

- “The country won’t run as per breaking news, yeh maan ke chaliye(let that be clear).”

'Drumbeaters will look for anything to justify Modi's pathetic electoral performance in 2024': Jairam Ramesh

Here's how Jairam Ramesh's early Satuday post onXread:

"The drumbeat to find silver linings in the mandate that has been a moral, political, and personal defeat for Narendra Modi has started. It is being propagated that Mr. Narendra Modi is the first to receive a mandate thrice in a row after Jawaharlal Nehru. How leading a party to 240 seats and becoming an ??-????? Pradhan Mantri is a mandate is not explained. Nehru, on the other hand, got 364 seats in 1952, 371 seats in 1957, and 361 seats in 1962 - a 2/3rd majority each time. Yet he remained a complete democrat, nurturing Parliament so very carefully with his constant presence Neither is Modi the only man since Nehru to be sworn in thrice - in a row or not. Atal Bihari Vajpayee was sworn in thrice in 1996, 1998 and 1999. And Indira Gandhi was sworn in 4 times-in 1966, 1967, 1971 and 1980. The drumbeaters will look for anything to justify Mr. Narendra Modi's pathetic electoral performance in 2024."

NDA Govt Formation Live Updates: Why most-valued partner TDP left NDA earlier

In the Lok Sabha election results declared on Tuesday, the Bharatiya Janata Party was reduced to 240 seats, failing to reach the majority mark of 272. Both the parties have put forth a list of demands, including preference for ministerial berths and the Speaker’s post.

The JD(U)’s tryst with the NDA is a well-told story, involving various exits and re-entries. However, the TDP’s too has been pretty eventful. We take a look.

NDA Govt Formation Live Updates: Ram Madhav on uncertainty of coalition politics, and more

In the latest edition of his weekly column for The Indian Express, RSS's Ram Madhav has written about the re-emergence of coalition politics after the Lok Sabha election results and what message can be learnt from this.

Here are some excerpts:

1. "For the supporters of the BJP, it is a matter of relief and reassurance that the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is returning to office. Although numerically diminished, the BJP emerged as the only party capable of providing a stable government compared to any other arrangement."

2."From the country’s standpoint, these results have a mixed message. Speaking to a news channel during the election campaign PM Modi said that he missed a “strong Opposition in 2014 to 2024”. “If there is one thing missing in my life, it is that of a good opposition,” he remarked. A strong Opposition does seem to be on the cards, but only experience can tell if it would be a “good Opposition”."

NDA Govt Formation Live Updates: Modi will become PM due to 'borrowed benevolence', says DMK

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam on Friday said the people of India did not vote for Narendra Modi in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, and that he will become the Prime Minister for the third time only due to "borrowed benevolence".

In an editorial in its Tamil-language mouthpiece Murasoli, the party said Modi sought votes in the name of God and when that campaign strategy did not work, he started claiming he was "God himself". He will become the PM now only due to the support of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister-elect N Chandrababu Naidu and Bihar CM and Janata Dal (United) supremo Nitish Kumar.

"Enough of making tall claims, assuring that (you will) do this and that with 400 seats and 370 seats; fulfill everyday needs of the Indian people. Create an India that is without tears and worries. That is enough," the June 7 editorial said.

"We see with our eyes the saffron party falling into an abyss," the editorial said. "Modi alone should own up responsibility for a setback and defeat of this kind. It is because he thought of showcasing election victory as his own individual achievement. As it has failed, that failure is also his own individual defeat."
