Obituaries

Patricia Elieen Lucas, 75, of Rochester

Posted Tuesday Afternoon

Patricia Elieen Lucas, 75, passed away peacefully at her lakehouse in Rochester, Indiana with family on Sunday, June 9, 2024.

She was born on August 30, 1948 at Saint Joseph Hospital in Kokomo, Indiana to Jack and Frances (Swihart) Link.

Known to her friends and family as Tish, she graduated from Kokomo High School in 1966. After marrying her high school sweetheart, Gregg, in June of 1970, she completed her Bachelors of Science in Education from Indiana University Bloomington the same year.

While teaching at Boulevard Elementary, Tish earned her Masters of Science in Education in 1975 from Indiana University Bloomington, again.

After teaching for ten years, Tish and Gregg focused on building a family back in Kokomo. They welcomed their first son Kurt in 1976, a daughter, Jennifer, in 1978, and the family was completed with her baby boy, Kent in 1981. She transitioned to a stay at home mom until her youngest reached kindergarten.

Tish’s passion of teaching literacy skills to struggling readers didn’t subside. She returned to the classroom, and continued to teach for Kokomo Schools. She joined a revolutionary group of educators focusing on Reading Recovery for the Title One Program at Kokomo Schools. Joining CaraJean Rayl, Carol Lutz, and Nancy Hostetler, they traveled the midwest learning new methods to teach reading and writing. They implemented new approaches to literacy education at Lincoln, Roosevelt, and Sycamore Elementary Schools.

Away from school, Tish loved spending time with family and friends, but she also loved time to herself. Tish would do as she pleased; she was her own woman - one of a kind, one in a million. Over the years her interests included bowling, golfing, playing cards, spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, but her favorite thing in the world was spending time with her daughter, mother, and her best friend, her sister Jackie. They loved shopping, talking, laughing, sunbathing, and most importantly loving each other.

In July of 2003, Tish suffered a debilitating stroke, coma, and extensive neurologic damage. She continued to survive, smiling but struggling as she consequently was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis the same year. Due to her diagnosis, Tish retired from teaching. While focusing on her health, she joined Gregg in purchasing a historic Kokomo staple, Moore’s Pie Shop, in 2006.

In 2017, the lifelong Kokomo residents purchased their retirement home on Lake Manitou in Rochester, Indiana. Once on the lake, Tish continued to love reading, and fell in love with boat rides around the lake with Gregg and her family. You would not see Tish on the pontoon without a can of Sprite and her customary bag of Ruffles chips. After battling Multiple Sclerosis for twenty-one years, her body subsided at her home while surrounded by family. In her final weeks, Tish reminisced about her life, as her daughter, Jennifer, by her side, selflessly cared for her.

Tish is survived by her husband, Gregg; son, Kurt; daughter, Jennifer (Brandon) Williams; son, Kent (Sarah)Lucas; grandchildren, Mackenzie (Kolbie) Cox, Kaylie (Tristin) Miller, Brody Williams, Olivia Lucas; and great-grandchildren, Raegan and Rilynn Cox.

A gathering to celebrate the life of Tish will be held at the Gregg and Tish’s Lakehouse in Rochester, IN on Sunday, June 30, 2024 from 2 to 4 pm. Family and friends are welcome to come share memories and refreshments with the family.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Kokomo Center Schools Education Foundation in honor of Tish to continue her legacy and passion for teaching literacy to struggling readers. “There are many little ways to enlarge your child’s world. Love of books is the best of all.” —Jacqueline Kennedy.

Martha Lucinda Reid, 77, of Fulton

Posted Tuesday Afternoon

Martha Lucinda Reid, 77, of Fulton, passed away on June 10, 2024, after a long illness. “Martha Lou” was born on February 10, 1947, to Howard and Florence Jennie (Buchanan) Jenkins in Madison, IN. Martha was married to Bob Reid on October 2, 1991, in Fulton after he just kept showing up at her door.

Martha didn’t know a stranger, she would’ve given the shirt off her back to anyone who needed it. She was fierce and a fighter. Martha was born with one leg shorter than the other and had multiple hip surgeries. She told us how her mom sat her by the window so she could see out when she had a body cast. She had her first child at 17, a preemie, and lost her husband to a car accident the same year. She worked in a factory for 20 years and eventually became the president of the union. She left the factory and traveled the country as a union organizer. She was the Norma Rae of her time; she even signed the factory that Norma Rae couldn’t. She had a lung collapse while out union organizing, immediately quit smoking and never looked back. She worked her bottom off as her lungs were failing her to get herself healthy enough to qualify for a lung transplant. She had a double lung transplant in May 2007. The average life after a double lung transplant is 6-7 years. She survived over 17 years after her transplant!

When she was a single mom, she took her kids to church every Sunday and welcomed 2-3 other families into her home Sunday afternoons. She wasn’t wealthy but was rich with friends and neighbors who enjoyed visiting her home or stopping by for a cup of coffee.

She volunteered for Donate Life Indiana traveling to BMVs to educate the staff and volunteered at community events to get donors signed up. She particularly enjoyed working at the South Bend Cubs games. She was grateful everyday for the lungs gifted to her. She also spent time volunteering at Shepherd’s Closet and Matthew’s Market to help others who were experiencing food insecurities, homelessness or who needed a helping hand.

Martha and Bob married and they were each other’s rock since 1991. She is a loyal friend and remains friends with folks from high school, from the factory, from union organizing and her besties Pat Bingle of 50 years and Shelley Baker of 40 years! Her other long-time friend Connie Hartman proceeded her in death. Martha was loved fiercely.

Martha is survived by her husband Bob, her sister Naomi Elizabeth Mack, Madison, IN; her three children Jennifer Lee Martin (Mike), Fulton, IN, Clair Keith Stewart II (Amy), Milford, MI, and Monica Lynn Barnett (Frank), Mason, OH; eight grandchildren Sarah Elizabeth Martin, Fulton, IN, Johnathan Michael Luke Martin (Hannah), Logansport, IN, Mackenzie Barry Barnett, Mason, OH, Tyler Zachary Stewart, Milford, MI, Brooklyn Sophia Barnett, Mason, OH, Lucas Keith Stewart, Milford, MI, Kyle Ryan Barnett, Mason, OH, and Adam Michael Stewart, Milford, MI. Martha had two great grandchildren Alivia Grace Martin and Noah Christopher Wagoner, Fulton, IN.

Martha was predeceased by her first husband, Luke Don Cloyd, her parents, Nathan Howard and Florence Jennie Jenkins, her siblings Norma Jean Jenkins, James William Jenkins, Betty Lou Henderson, Anna Catherine Geyman, Esla Curtis Jenkins, Myrtle Beatrice Brierly, Nathan Howard Jenkins Jr. and one grandchild, Alex Stewart.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests you sign up to become an organ donor or make donations to Donate Life Indiana or IU Methodist Hospital Transplant Unit, Indianapolis.

A time to Celebrate Martha’s life will take place from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. Sunday, June 16, 2024 at the Fulton Community Building, 204 E. Dunn Street, Rochester (Fulton), Indiana.

George Delano Swihart, 89

Posted Tuesday Afternoon

George Delano Swihart, 89, passed away on D-Day, June 6, 2024, in Marion, Indiana with his granddaughter Gerri by his side.

George was born at home on November 14, 1934, the first child and only son of Charles (Bill) and Evelyn Irene Kamp Swihart. He grew up with three sisters in the Akron and Gilead area. He graduated in 1953, having played basketball, softball, and ran track for the Wildcats.

He always loved planes and history-–especially WWII. He remembered his uncle, a member of the 73rd Squadron, sitting him in the co*ckpit of his plane on a visit. He joined the Indiana Army National Guard after graduation. After his 1956 discharge as a PFC, he remained in the standby reserve until 1961. He never stopped studying planes though, and was happy to share what he knew.

In 1954, George married Lois Keim. They had three children. After their divorce, he married Billie Johnson in November of 1978. She preceded him in death in April of 2019.

George always had more than one job. He worked at General Tire in Wabash, drove semi for Hoffman Trucking, and worked at Sealed Power from 1965 until he retired in 1995.

He used to tell stories of when he worked for Whit Gast in Akron. He remembered digging the potatoes and onions, and stacking wood crates 22 high in Whit’s barn. He could tell you the difference between red and black muck and which was better for what use. He said it was hard work, but everyone had fun.

He helped many farmers through the years, working with friends and family alike. He recalled baling hay and getting 10 cents a bale.

His love for growing things followed him into retirement. He always had flowers and a beautiful garden. During harvest, he would load the fruits of his labor in his wagon and deliver them to the neighbors. They especially looked forward to his watermelon and cantaloupe. He was known—and loved—in the neighborhood as Mr. Green Jeans.

George was a heck of a mechanic. He worked on everything from lawnmower engines to semis, helping anyone in need, and often not even charging for his time.

He was a member of the American Legion, Eagles, and Moose in Rochester. He was in charge of bingo at the Eagles and prepared hog and turkey roasts for their big dinners.

George had a smile that covered his whole face. He was easy going and no one had anything negative to say about him. His kind heart and generous spirit will be forever missed by all who knew him.

He was always very active, but his health began to decline in November of 2023. He spent time in both Woodlawn Hospital of Rochester and Miller’s Merry Manor (where his granddaughter Gerri could keep an eye on him.) He was so appreciative of the care he received in both facilities, forming close bonds with those he came to know. Sitting was not his cup of tea and slowing him down was a challenge—he fought hard to the end.

George is survived by his daughter Susan (Marty) Click, Peru, and his song Ronald E., Mexico; stepdaughter Dixie Frenoy; and stepsons Rex Shepherd and Jimmie Johnson; two granddaughters: Gerri Click, Wabash and Breanna Cole, Atoka, Tennessee; and one great-graddaughter, Kelcie Cole, also of Tennessee. Also surviving are his first wife, Lois Swihart, and his sisters: Janet Strevey, Wabash; Joyce (Jerry) Hudson, Akron; and Karen Aikmna, Ft. Wayne. A dear friend, Judy Kuhn of Rochester, also survives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Billie; two step-daughter; and he and Lois’ infant son, Larry D.

A celebration of the life of George Swihart will be at 3:00 PM on Friday, June 14, 2024, in the Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 West 18th St., Rochester.

Friends may visit with the family for two hours prior to his services.

Pastor Wayne Balmer will officiate.

The Fulton County Veteran's Honor Guard and the United States Army Honor's Team will accord military honors.

Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to the Fulton County Veterans Honor Guard.
