Paris Olympics 2024 — Day 5
It is another action-packed day in Paris on the fifth day of the 2024 Olympics.
Focus was on Bercy Arena where the male gymnasts are took part in the individual all-around final and Japan's Oka Shinnosuke took the gold medal.
Over at Roland Garros: Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula crashed out of the women’s doubles but there was better news for Tommy Paul, who has reached the quarterfinals of the men’s singles.
At La Defense, Katie Ledekcy won her eighth Olympic gold medal in the 1500m freestyle before Leon Marchand made history of his own with an unprecedented pair of gold medals in the 200m fly and 200m breaststroke.
The USWNT beat Australia 2-1 in Marseille before the U.S. men's basketball team eased to a 103-86 blowout win against South Sudan.
Medal table | How to follow
3x3 Basketball: Poland defeats Team USA
Like Team USA's women's 3x3 team, the men are off to a disastrous start falling to Poland 22-14.
Team Poland held The U.S. to only two made two-pointers, both from Dylan Travis, meanwhile, three of Poland's four players made at least 1 two-pointer.
Also, all four Polish players scored at least three points.
As for Team USA, they have struggled to score consistently and have matched up with two teams with solid size across the board.
Poland's Adrian Bogucki stands 7-foot-1 and dominated Wednesday's game with seven points and five rebounds.
Jimmer Fredette has struggled to make shots in two games, only scoring seven points.
Team USA will need Jimmy Buckets to find his shooting stroke if they want to turn this 0-2 start around.
Looking ahead, Team USA will play Lithuania on August 1st.

Basketball: USA ease past South Sudan
The gold medals haven't quite fallen for USA in the swimming pool so far at these Games, but they will expecting to take home the top prize in the men's basketball.
The star-studded U.S. team has just beaten South Sudan 103-86, with Bam Adebayo top-scoring on 18 points. LeBron James added another 12 points, becoming the third U.S. player in history to score 300 Olympic points after Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Durant.
Joel Embiid, last year’s NBA MVP and the Americans’ starter at center for their first six games this summer, didn’t play at all in the blowout win.
Swimming: New world record as Pan Zhanle wins gold!
What an evening of entertainment in the pool!
In the final race of the night, China's Pan Zhanle has just cruised to the gold medal in the 100m freestyle and has shattered his own world record, going 0.4 seconds faster than his own record at 46.40.
Pan was in a league of his own as Australia's Kyle Chalmers and David Popvici of Romania followed him for the silver and bronze medals.
Swimming: Marchand wins a third gold of Paris Olympics 2024!
What more can I say about Leon Marchand that hasn't already been said?
The Frenchman is a machine and he has just done something that no swimmer has done before: he has won the 200m breaststroke and the 200m fly at the same Olympic Games.
And he won them both on the same night!
Oh, and if that wasn't enough, he also won the 400m individual medley earlier in the week. The 22-year-old home hero has just stamped his name into the Olympic history books!
You can follow reaction, as well as minute-by-minute updates from the other swimming action, here.
3x3 Basketball: Azerbaijan defeats Team USA
USA's women's 3x3 team is off to a disastrous start after falling to Azerbaijan 20-17, meaning they have lost both of their matches so far.
Azerbaijan's Tiffany Hayes starred with 11 of her team's 20 points along with seven rebounds.
Team USA's biggest issue is their lack of shotmaking, they will go several possessions without scoring and haven't shot the ball well. They are 2-of-14 on two-pointers through two games.
If the U.S. wants to defend its gold medal, it will need more from Rhyne Howard who only had one point today. Their best offense comes when Dearic Hamby is aggressive and attacks downhill. This USA team has versatility, they will need to use that if they want a chance at a medal.
USA will not have to wait long for their next match as they face Australia tomorrow.
Tennis: Fritz and Gauff out of the mixed doubles
And Coco Gauff's thoroughly disappointing debut Olympic campaign is over.
Her and Taylor Fritz have been beaten by Canadian's Felix Auger-Aliassime and Gabriela Dabrowski on a match tiebreak (6-7, 6-3, 8-10).
The U.S. pair had a mini break at 8-6 in the match tiebreak. but they lost four straight points and have been eliminated.
It ends flag bearer Gauff's involvement in these Games, while Fritz has just the men's doubles left after being beaten 4-6, 5-7 by Lorenzo Musetti in the singles earlier on.
Fritz and fellow American Tommy Paul will face British pair Andy Murray and Dan Evans in the quarterfinal of the men's doubles tomorrow.

Fencing: South Korea win gold in men's team sabre
The latest gold medal of these Games has been given to South Korea's men's sabre team in the fencing.
They held off a late comeback from Hungary to win 45-41 in the final.
Hosts France won bronze in the event a little earlier on.
Tennis: 'I don't know if this was the last time', says Nadal
While he is still playing at the age of 38, Rafa Nadal will always face questions over his retirement. Following his defeat in the men's doubles with Carlos Alcaraz, he was asked about his future.
"I'm happy with the love and support I receive here every time I step out on court. I don't know if this was the last time," he said.
"Possibly, yes. One stage has ended for me: my objective was to focus on the Olympic Games and afterwards I'd have to decide, and that's what I will do.
"Now I go home and rest and disconnect a bit. When I have [a clear mind], I will take the decision of what the next stage will be for me."
Tennis: Fritz and Gauff into match tiebreak
It has not been a Games to remember for Coco Gauff so far as she has been eliminated from both the women's singles and the women's doubles over the last 36 hours.
And it looked like she might face the same fate in the mixed doubles where she is paired with Taylor Fritz — who is playing the third of his three matches today — after they lost the first set 6-7 against Canadian pair Felix Auger-Aliassime and Gabriela Dabrowski.
But the U.S. duo have just taken the second set 6-3 to set up a match tiebreak at Roland Garros.
Swimming: Ledecky wins eighth gold with Olympic record!
The fans inside La Defense are thoroughly enjoying themselves this evening.
Having already seen Leon Marchand pick up his second gold medal of the Games (and maybe his first of two this evening), they have just seen a legend of the sport win an eighth gold medal!
USA's Katie Ledecky set an Olympic record (15:30.02) in the 1500m freestyle final for her 12th Olympic medal. She needs just one more to tie Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina for the most gold medals for any female Olympian.
Sweden won their first gold of Paris Olympics 2024 when world record holder Sarah Sjostrom won the 100m freestyle final ahead of USA's Torri Huske.

Swimming: Leon Marchand gets gold number one
Leon Marchand has kicked off his bid for an improbable double gold in style this evening, setting a new Olympic record in the first of his two finals this evening.
And Katie Ledecky is up next…
Join us for race-by-race coverage of the swimming at the Paris Games.
Tennis: Nadal and Alcaraz knocked out!
Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz are out of the men's doubles tournament in the Olympics. The Spanish team fell 6-2, 6-4 to Americans Rajeev Ram and Austin Krajicek.
At 3-3 in the second set, a close call on a shot to the sideline on break point was ruled in by the chair umpire after she got down to inspect the mark. Ram ripped a shot into the corner that barely clipped the outer doubles line, chair umpire Miriam Bley ruled.
Nadal and Alcaraz argued the call for a few minutes, believing the mark showed the ball was out. They didn't win the argument, went down a break at 4-3, and were ousted three games later.
Swimming: Katie Ledecky and Leon Marchand in action
We’re almost underway on the fifth night of swimming at the Paris Games.
You can follow race-by-race coverage here.
Gymnastics: Oka Shinnosuke wins gold for Japan
What drama at the Bercy Arena!
Japan’s Oka Shinnosuke absolutely nailed his dismount on the high bar to score a huge 14.500, putting his combined total at 86.832.
That left China’s Zhang Boheng needing 14.866 to equal Oka’s total.
Zhang managed a 14.733 in the team event on Monday so it is certainly within reach … but he only manages a 14.633 and the gold medal goes to the Japanese!
Zhang takes silver and his compatriot, Xiao Ruoteng, claims bronze.
Swimming: Leon Marchand aims to make history
Frenchman Leon Marchand is attempting to win two swimming finals on the same night in Paris. Needless to say it will not be too easy.
These are two grueling races, almost exactly two hours apart (with a medal ceremony in the middle, if he earns one).
The 200m fly field also includes world record-holder Kristof Milak of Hungary, who is the top seed overall. The 200m breaststroke final includes Olympic record-holder Zac Stubblety-Cook from Austria.

Volleyball: Team USA defeats Serbia
Survive and advance is the name of the game and the defending women’s Olympic volleyball champions the United States today squeaked past the defending world champions Serbia.
Team USA won the first two sets but a sudden shift in momentum allowed Serbia to win the next two sets.
The 5th set was a nail-biter with both teams trading points but the U.S. eventually pulled away to win 16-14.
Team USA is now 1-1 at these Games and will face France on August 4th to end pool play.
Archery: Wednesday matches postponed
Another weather delay, this time in the archery.
The last six matches of the day have been postponed to tomorrow because of the risk of thunderstorms in Paris this evening.
Soccer: USWNT and Australia still goalless
There’s a big soccer clash happening in Marseille and, midway through the first half, the USWNT and Australia are level 0-0.
