You know how ocean paradise feels so different from other starts? Void dwellers? Toxic knights? Well shattered ring finally also feels super unique again. I've never played anything like this before. Scrap mining is my life now. Mining guilds, industrious, cybernetic with mining drills. I'm getting 1500 minerals a month from the three ring segments, and 600 alloys a month, only 200 of those alloys are from dedicated foundry workers on a gaia world. The rest, most of it, comes from the scrap miners directly. I haven't even built HALF the districts on my second and third ring segments lol. I am never restoring the ring lol. Unfortunately though, I'm still no good at getting my science up without restoring a ring, so my second ring keeps arriving very late (in fact i ended the last game without building one, and this one is pretty far along already). I will keep playing shattered ring till I can speed that up. I used to play nothing but shattered ring, lord help me I'm about to go back to my old habits. Next time I will build my first science hab much earlier, and build more of them and not stop.

    if you want to REALLy have some fun with shattered ring, take the civic that lets you convert food to alloys. then you can restore the ring sections, and NOTHING beats a ring segment agri district for food production, which you can funnel directly to another ring section for alloys

    And now I've never felt a greater need to be able to use the Harvesters traits.

    oh yeah i always loved that. void dwellers with their agri bonus is pretty good too. but if you go catalytic the scrap miners go away Thank you so much for new shattered ring (118) i like going all in on the scrap miners, never done that before.

    Really? I'm not seeing anything that would suggest that in the game files. Or did you mean that you're not getting as much use out of the minerals?

    i just mean, if i go catalytic i'm restoring the ringworld and abandoning the scrap mining. the agridistricts you're talking about, the ones with massive food output, are from a restored ringworld anyway.

      yes. the thing is, you're drastically gimping yourself in the mid-late game if you don't restore the ring sections. a fully restored ring may only have 10 districts, but they're HUGE. like 40+ housing for a city districts, and 10 extremely productive jobs per agriculture, research, trade, or industrial district.

      the scrap mining will never compete with a fully restored ring for alloy production. the catalytic civic lets you dodge the pain from losing the mineral production. when you have food going to alloys instead of minerals, you don't need half as much mineral production and can usually get by with just your space-based mining facilities for your consumer goods production. with trade league or consumer benefits trade policies, you don't need minerals at all and can just buy however many you need on the market.

      the only thing gimping me is the science lol. the amount of minerals i produce from the three ring colonies is like 1.5K when i have six trade districts on the two guaranteed habitables with the rest mining and then all mining on the capital. this is enough to power multiple foundry ecumenopoli/gaias till i can finally get my new ring. the lack of ring science districts is the real weakness, and so far having one science hab has worked well but i need far more. i think my main problem is expanding out too far, leaving me starved for the influence needed for the like 4 science habs i should probably build before getting to the stage of building rings. thus far i've been doing one science hab and that's unacceptable.

      i find gimping yourself in some aspect to double, triple, or quadruple down on some strength is a fun way to play the game, this is why i want to go all in on scrap miners hahaha. minmaxing for roleplay, not for meta lol

        when i first started learning to play(and i still suck horribly, don't get me wrong) my favorite RP build was a "divine empire" psionic build with imperial cult civic paired with masterful crafters. it just got irksome to me though becuase i wanted to RP a purely benevolent and friendly spiritualist empire but authoritarian/spiritualist/militarist tends to cause you to get the most aggressive, "evil" flavored factions to appear.

        One thing I really wish was the case is for the starting ringworld section section to start with an Industrial district. The starting alloy production is genuinely so weak.

        The key is to skip industrial districts. Just keep building more mineral districts. Take mercantile tree and build a few trade districts for your consumer goods. Trade districts also have some consumer goods production directly, 1 consumer goods worker each. So you rely on the scrap miners for alloys and trade districts for consumer goods. The only dedicated foundry workers I end up with are on the first foundry world I build. A gaia or an ecu would be nice for that. I don't put alloy workers on the shattered ring itself.

        And for the trade districts I start transferring them to the second and third ring segments when I can. Eventually I end up with those two being 6 trade districts the rest minerals and my capital all minerals. When the new ring is built, i move all trade districts to the new one off the shattered ring and go all mining on it.

        Hell no. Shattered ring is not OP. It is a different way of playing the game. Lots of fun, but very steep tradeoffs that make it balanced. This is not like being able to have 1k research early. In fact, committing to scrap mining like I have means sacrificing the research districts that restoring the shattered ring would give me.

        I like your attitude. In most of my games I try to focus on one aspect just to see how far I can go. I found in 4x games, focusing on science is a fairly safe bet to win, and Stellaris is no exception. But going to extremes can be foolhardy - and at least as much fun!
