Sam G What a disappointment! With Karloff & Co., I was hoping for a worthy Mummy-adjacent film. Instead, I got a meandering flop of a mess that doesn't even contain supernatural elements, despite its provenance. The plot was weak, the acting mostly awful, characterization was absent, and there were abrupt shifts that were unaccounted for. The sets were probably the best feature of the movie. It is one of the weakest films of the late Boris Karloff's celebrated career. the movie is helped by very good performances by the supporting cast. Though he is billed as the movie's star, Karloff only has two lines of dialogue and only appears in a few scenes. Almost reminds me of the late Bela Lugosi's "performance" in "Plan 9 From Outer Space". Aside from that the movie's storyline is not well done. Contrived is hardly the word. Boris Karloff has done better, much better, in his great career. Don't bother with "The Ghoul" it is not worth your time. Frankenstein" and the original version of "The Mummy" however, that is a different story. Rated 2/5 Stars • Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Boris Karloff was already a horror mainstay at this point in his career, having played Frankenstein's monster, The Mummy, and Fu Manchu, and now playing the titular Ghoul. This film has a deceased Karloff coming back to life after an Egyptian jewel he was buried with is stolen. The film really does, pun intended, come to life after Karloff's resurrection, but the build up to that point for the film's short 79-minute runtime is a bit of a slog. Overall, this British horror film isn't exactly a Universal Pictures Horror classic, but it is solid entertainment. FUN FACT! "The Ghoul" is one of many films to have fallen into the public domain, so it is freely available for download on the internet.
